3D: Character

I decided to model an existing character called Karkat from the web comic Homestuck who does not already exist in 3D dimensions. In the comic he is represented in a very basic way so I decided to take that and do my own drawing of him where I could make my own decisions about his height and body type when modelling.

Side by side comparison.

For reference when modelling I painted a 2D front, back and side view of Karkat so that I wouldn't stray away from his design. Because I had trouble learning how to model (and absolutely no idea how to add smaller details) some of the smaller details in the 2D drawing I was unable to make in Maya.

The final result, though rather crude and far from my personal standard for hand drawn characters, I feel it was the best I could achieve with my current knowledge of Maya and 3D modelling. I'm as happy as I can be with something so far out of my comfort zone in a medium I have no interest in, but I have a lot of admiration for those who do it well.

Final rendered piece with lighting.
