Louis Wain has been my favourite illustrator for some years now, he has created hundreds upon hundreds of paintings and drawings of cats and anthropomorphised cats, which are usually quite humorous and covering a broad range of subjects from music, fashion, sports, politics and general cat behaviour. His cats can quite often be seen in Victorian fashion in human situations with beautiful colour palletes which keeps bringing me back to look at his work.
I would have liked to painted my animation by hand in the style of Louis Wain, it would have perfectly matched the mood and setting I wanted for my animation and looked beautiful if done correctly. However, I feel that this would have been out of my ability and decided to drop it and go with something simpler and easier to animate.
It was while looking through Louis Wain's Cats by Chris Beetles that I found an image which prompted me forwards with the design of Jasper. The shape of cat's face, specifically his nose gave me a push in the right direction that I desperately needed. I had been having trouble shifting from Disney style into something that was different but still recognisably a tiger and I felt this this was a look I could work with and build on.
